ARTIST STATEMENT
These paintings explore notions of a landscape that is not fully attainable because of inflicted barriers. The paintings begin with transparent layers of organic oils. Thin mixtures of the oils are repeatedly brushed over the surface, washed away, and reapplied. This process slowly builds the surface of the canvas. Gradually, subtle organic shapes, and tonal variations emerge. Once dry, household black enamel is applied heavily over the oils, leaving small windows of the earlier translucent work, and in some cases leaving only thin lines that peer between the black enamel forms. The end result leaves the viewer wanting to understand what is beneath the black barrier. The juxtaposition of contemporary and traditional media evokes the discord between the urban and the natural, in a progressively urban world.
